DESCRIPTION
The group brings together programmers and humanists who work together on Digital Literary Studies. Our understanding of literature is a broad one and more in the spirit of Literary and Cultural Studies, or of New Philology. It integrates literary research with questions of cultural studies. In classical terms, then, we treat literature as a “secondary modelling system,” i.e. a complex of various conventions superimposed on natural language. Our focus is on notation (visuality of text, manuscripts, digital editions) as well as linguistic material; on contexts of production and reception (social conditioning of literary culture, conventions of literary creation and reading).
The group aims to conduct quantitative literary studies on literary works themselves and on their various metadata. This implies the use of statistical methods in quantitative textual analysis along the lines of distant reading: stylometry, quantitative genre studies, research into multimedial writing (e.g. blogs), literary geography, corpus building. Also, new types of data sources and analytic tools will be used to study literary culture; this includes using bibliographic data in research and visualization; new media textual analysis with quantitative tools (blogs, microblogs, twitter), and reception studies.
Goals
- Adaptation of existing textual resources, cultural databases, linguistic and visualisation tools to philological research;
- Creation and development of new textual resources according to contemporary standards such as TEI;
- Integration of linguistic tools with those used in bibliography, imaging, geography etc. – those that go beyond a linguistic understanding of text;
- Developing international collaboration with DARIAH ERIC working groups (mainly those in VCC2) and associated initiatives (mainly NeDiMAH and CENDARI);
- Developing and extending existing collaboration between DARIAH-PL consortium partners.
